Thanks to all of you guys who took our “Favorite Summer Movie” poll. We’re still pretty new to the blogging thing, and we discovered that polling feature out of the blue—so, we just put it in with a “eh, what the hell” kind of vibe. We’ll have more polls for you later, of course, but I thought this one had a pretty interesting result, so here’s a quick comment on that.
Of the 10 summer blockbusters we listed, “Star Trek” was far and away the winner, with 8 votes. A close 2nd was “Up” (forgot how much I loved that one) with 6 votes, and “District 9” and “Inglourious Basterds” with 3 each. I’m pretty much on the same page—there were a number of good movies this summer (like “Harry Potter,” which kind of got ignored in the results, or great indies like “500 Days of Summer,” which I stupidly forgot to put in the poll), but “Star Trek” was the most exhilarating, just-plain-fun movie I’ve seen in a while—the kind of movie I couldn’t wait to see again, or just buy the DVD and make my friends watch it (who either thought it was too geeky, or, as one of my closest friends, Cory, said it: “I’m a ‘Star Wars’ guy—I can’t just switch teams.”). Luke and I are huge fans of J.J. Abrams to begin with (a crazy little show called “LOST” sealed that obsession), but Abrams made me care about a franchise I had zero interest in, and he gave us a blockbuster that ably mixed great characters and amazing action. It actually reminded me of the first "Pirates of the Caribbean”—another much-loved, huge adventure film that had something for everyone—and it’s cool to see that “Star Trek” still resonates with people 4 months after it came out. The soon-to-come sequel (with “LOST” co-creator Damon Lindelof writing the script!) should rock.
Oh, and “Up” was wonderful too, of course…but, at this point, Pixar can just do no wrong!

Star Trek is getting re-released in IMAX this weekend, to fill the hole in IMAX scheduling til the 18th. Universal Citywalk's IMAX is the only one in LA playing it. Just an FYI. :)
ReplyDeleteAh, that's awesome! I really wanted to see it in IMAX when it came out, but I missed the first run. Thanks for the heads up! :)
