I love this piece of news. I heard a bit here and there about it, but today we got the official voice casting and a Winter 2010 timeframe for Disney’s new animated fairy tale. I grew up on the Disney hand-animated classics, like “Aladdin,” “Pinocchio,” “Little Mermaid,” “Lion King,” and tons more, and it was a major letdown when the studio closed down that whole division after “Treasure Planet” crashed at the box-office (and I liked “Treasure Planet” too—not a masterpiece, but I thought it was a fun, inventive adventure). There’s something really beautiful about the hand-drawn style—a charm, a vibrancy to it that 3D computer graphics can’t quite replicate, so I’m psyched to see the style coming back, starting with Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” this winter.
“Rapunzel” will be a spin on the beloved fairy tale of the princess with a thing for towers and ridiculously long hair (and with possibly the strongest scalp in literature—how would you feel if some dude had to climb your hair for 20 stories?!). For the voices, Disney lined up Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, and “Chuck’s” Zachary Levi as a likeable bandit who kidnaps her. Moore stole the show in “Saved,” and was the best thing in the pretty awful “American Dreamz” (and she could sing!)—she’s made to be a Disney animated princess. And Zachary Levi may be the most talented guy not getting enough work—he’s awesome on “Chuck” and just strikes me as a funny, genuinely cool guy—this is fantastic exposure for him (and Ace and I will go into “Chuck”-love-overload as soon as that show comes back next March). Alan Menken will do the songs for this (the genius behind “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and “Enchanted” soundtracks), so this is shaping up to be a great overall package.
Look for this to hit theaters probably around next Christmas. In the meanwhile, that’s some early artwork on top—check out more at Fanpop, and we’ll post a trailer as soon as it goes online. Can’t wait to see more!
What do you guys think? Excited by the voices or the concept?
